We’re returning to Castell Coch for this instalment of “Postcards from Tongwynlais“.

Old black and white postcard featuring photo of Castell Coch

This card has a stamp commemorating King George V’s Silver Jubilee in 1935. The postmark is unclear but it looks like it’s dated 1935.

You can see in the comparison below that very little has changed in the last 85 years. The safety measures on the drawbridge are about the only difference. The tree in the foreground has recently been felled though.

The message reads, “Every body is alright. Edward and Dudley have gone away.

“Dear Mam and Dad. Mrs Ellis and I can stay until Thursday so I will leave Taffs Well about 6 o’clock. I have just seen Aunty Doris in the Hospital. I am going to Aunty Mary’s tomorrow. With love Eva.”

I hope you enjoyed this postcard. There are plenty more to come.

  1. could well be 1935, as the Silver Jubilee stamps were first issued on the 7th May 1935, its great to look back at the old images of Coch, much has changed

  2. It seems strange in our time to think of someone sending a postcard from Tongwynlais to Treherbet, when (lockdown permitting) we could be there in half an hour or so. A sign how quickly times change.
