If you’ve walked down Ironbridge Road recently, you may have noticed that the hedge and undergrowth have been cleared as you approach the bridge. The brickwork and tiles that have been exposed belong to the bridge keeper’s lodge, also known as the Toll House, that once stood there.
The only photo of the building that I’ve seen is by Ian L Wright. This image is from Volume Four of The Tongwynlais, Taff’s Well and Nantgarw Picture Album. This book was edited by the former Vicar of Tongwynlais, Roger L. Brown.
The photo, along with more information, also appears in The Glamorganshire and Aberdare Canals (2004) by Stephen Rowson and Ian L Wright. The book is a fantastic resource and can still be purchased online. (Search for ISBN: 1903599121.)
Tongwynlais Historical Society began clearing the site in May 2021 with help from volunteers and local businesses.
The area has been overgrown for many years with only a few signs that there’s something underneath.
Volunteers have found some interesting items during the clearance, including a coin from 1861.
Members of the society are planning to develop a trail from the Toll House through the village with information boards highlighting the history of the village.
