I’ve started posting photos from my runs to show the amazing views you can experience in and around Tongwynlais.

These routes can also be enjoyed in walking boots rather than trail shoes. I regularly take my camera equipment out on a long walk.

I’ve included some links at the end of this article to help you find a running community. There are lots of organisations promoting the sport across Wales and plenty of local groups.

Castell Coch

Nestled in Fforest Fawr, Castell Coch is an ideal place to visit during a run through the forest.

The Castell Coch Hill Climb is famous for punishing hill reps, on foot and by bike.

You have to stop for a selfie, and get some cake if the tea room is open.

Craig yr Allt

Craig yr Allt is on the opposite side of the Taff Valley to the Garth. You can get to it via Blackbrook Road or from the Taff Trail.

The views from both summits are spectacular.

It tends to be quieter than the Garth but no less punishing to reach the top!

Find Your Way

If you’re not familiar with the north of Cardiff, here are a few points of interest to explore.

Glamorganshire Canal

The Glamorganshire Canal is a fantastic place to walk and enjoy the wildlife. The trails by the water are narrow and flat. There are a few different routes and the Taff Trail is very close by.

There are some very technical trails on the higher section. Some of the paths are crumbling and most are covered with tree roots and rocks.

Taff Trail (North)

The Taff Trail shouldn’t need any introduction.

This 55 mile route from Brecon to Cardiff is used by walkers, runners and cyclists.

The sections through Tongwynlais are well sign posted and perfect for getting off the roads.

Castell Coch and the Taff Trail
