Tongwynlais Temperance Band have won the Welsh Regional Brass Band Championships in Swansea.

The win has secured the Welsh qualification place in the 2014 European Brass Band Championships to be held in Perth Scotland.

“The Regional qualifier is one of the key contests in the banding calendar where bands compete to qualify for the National Finals in the Royal Albert Hall” says band Chairman Jason Bevan. “We were fortunate last year to secure automatic qualification after securing a 4th place in London which meant the pressure was off us when we arrived in Swansea for the contest!”

Under the direction of the band’s Professional Conductor Steve Sykes, Tongwynlais gave a performance that found favour with the adjudicator and in addition to winning 1st prize took the coveted European invite. “This is an outstanding result for the band as we enter our 125th year” says Jason, “the commitment of the players is reaping rewards and to represent Wales at the highest level of banding is such an honour. This will put the band – and Cardiff – firmly on the banding map!

The band are based in Llandaff North and have a busy schedule coming up including preparations for their anniversary concert in Castell Coch on 1 June 2013.
