Tongwynlais Adventures – Trail Running

I started trail running in 2014 and I’ve written a few posts about my adventures in and around Tongwynlais.

My new website, Cardiff Trails, launched in March 2023. I wanted my own space to log runs, share photos and write about running gear.

If you’ve ever considered trail running, hopefully I can help you find your community.

Getting Started

There are loads of groups and clubs in the Cardiff area. I’ve run with quite a few in the last year and they’re all so friendly! My first recommendation is to contact a group and find out what they offer.

Trail running, like any sport, has its risks and I would strongly recommend you only run with an experienced group.

Groups

I’ve joined a few group runs recently and they’ve all been so welcoming. The CDF Runners meet on a Thursday for their “TNT” sessions. These are quite often in Fforest Fawr.

The Running Punks organise a weekly trail run on Wednesdays, which are quite often in and around the village.

Guided Runs

Companies like Trail Nation and Obree Coaching organise guided runs that are great for people getting into the sport.

I joined Christian and Alice for a run up the Garth last year. The pace was really relaxed, I had a great time chatting to the group and we enjoyed a stunning sunset.

Stuart organises social runs on a Friday all around South Wales. I went on another run up the Garth and met some more friendly folk.

Trail Running in Tongwynlais

I may be biased but I think Tongwynlais is the best place to live for trail running. We’ve got so many beautiful trails on our doorstep and some great places to stop for something to eat.

If you’re planning to explore Fforest Fawr, make sure you stop by the Forest Tea Room.

The First Light Coffee Shop opened in January 2024, taking over from plan2ride. Matt, Rhod and Rav are all keen trail runners. The café continues to be a hub for all outdoor enthusiasts.

Gear

You need a basic amount of equipment for trail running. I’ve published some shoe reviews and a gear guide.

I’ve had some great advice from the staff in Moti. My favourite online reviews are from Run4Adventure on YouTube.
